St. Louis Park, named one of America's 100 Best Communities for Young People by America's Promise - The Alliance for Youth, has five public elementary schools (two K-3, two 3-6, one K-6 Spanish immersion), a junior high (7-8) and a senior high.
A full-day, fee-based kindergarten option compliments traditional half-day kindergarten.
St. Louis Park is one of only two districts in the state that is currently in the process of implementing the International Baccalaureate (IB) program for students from pre-school through high school. IB is an internationally recognized method for teaching that uses inquiry, local and international focus and collaboration throughout the school day to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people. It creates a true international flavor within a building and includes weekly world language instruction for all students.
Our highly rigorous IB Diploma Programme has been in place at SLP Senior High for a number of years and we are in the application phase of offering a fully authorized Primary Years Programme (PYP) in our four elementary schools. In addition, we are in the exploration phase of adding the IB Middle Years Programme at SLP Junior High School.
All seven schools have been named National Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education. The senior high, offering both AP and IB programs, is recognized by Newsweek magazine as number 328 on its list of the top 1000 high schools in the nation.
Strong parent involvement is a hallmark of St. Louis Park Public Schools where parents support learning as classroom volunteers and members of site councils, advisory councils, booster clubs and parent/teacher organizations.
The schools provide a full range of special-education services, including a gifted and talented program as well as 27 non-athletic extracurricular activities. Its Community Education department is the city's largest provider of childcare with options for infants through elementary-aged children. The DropZone offers after school homework help and mentoring to junior high students.
St. Louis Park works to strengthen families and build a more caring community for children and teens through its Children First initiative, a partnership of the schools, city, business community, health-care sector and religious organizations.
District 283 schools have won state and national recognition for school publications, gifted education, innovative reading and writing programs, math instruction, geography education and technology education.
